Electric vehicle (EV) models continue to expand

Each year, more electric cars, vans and trucks are used to deliver goods, drive passengers and visit job sites. Less maintenance, lower fuel costs and lower emissions are some of the many benefits of EVs. A wider variety of options, including light- and medium-duty vehicles, is yet another reason many businesses are considering adding EVs to their fleets.

“Not long ago, EV options were mostly limited to sedans. Today, automakers are taking advantage of technology advancements that make a wider range of vehicles available—including pickup trucks, SUVs and cargo vans,” said Rob Crain, MGE Director of Customer Experience and Energy Services.

New and upcoming models generally fall into two categories—all-electric, sometimes referred to as battery electric vehicles (BEV), or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). BEVs have an electric motor, and the battery recharges by plugging into an electrical outlet or charging station.

Depending on the model, you can drive more than 250 miles on a charge. Some models can travel more than 300 miles, and more vehicles with longer driving ranges will be available. PHEVs have an electric motor and battery, but they use a gasoline engine for backup. Drivers can travel on electricity before the gas engine kicks in.

MGE EV fleet analysis

From start to finish, MGE can help business customers who are interested in making the transition to electric fleets. Businesses researching electric options can schedule an EV Fleet Analysis with MGE.

“With a fleet analysis, MGE looks at how a business’s current gasoline or diesel vehicles are being used. This includes an analysis of miles traveled, fueling stops and parking duration. The analysis helps businesses determine if EVs will be a good fit, with a detailed report showing how much it will cost to own and operate an EV in comparison to current vehicle costs,” said Crain.
